Bareeki "Chikankari" ki

From The Craft Masala ! Blog

The regal feeling of wearing an embroidered andembellished chikankari ensemble is something that almost every person wants, as it exudes the classic royal touch. ‘Chikan’ means embroidery; hence, the meticulously done hand embroidery on a number of textile fabrics like muslin, silk, chiffon, organza, net, and more to accentuate the look of the dress, making it more detailed and hence, more classic.

Chikan embroidery initially began on white clothes with white thread but with the period of time and improvisations in the fashion industry, Chikan is now embroidered with colored and silk threads in colors to catch up with the trends and keep chikankari up-to-date. Nowadays, chikankari is not just done on traditional clothing but also western wear like gowns, bottoms ,dress material; accessories like bagsnotebooks and is also incorporated in home decor like cushion covers and more. The experiments have been done with cloth as in the way of additional embellishments like Mukaish, Kamdani, Badla, sequin, bead, and mirror work, which gives it a lavish look. As the  fabric cannot be too thick or hard, chikan is mostly done on fabrics like cotton, semi-Georgette, pure Georgette, crepe, chiffon, silk, or any fabric which is light and which highlights the embroidery.

The designs that are created, actually depend upon the thicknesses of the thread the stitches namely backstitch, chain stitch and hemstitch. The whole process is a piecemeal process as first the outline of the pattern desired is drawn on the cloth followed by engraving the same with the thread or Block printing finishing it off with washing it and removing all traces of the printed pattern.

Itokri has worked closely with artisans sourced through Dastkar, who help us with intricate hand embroidery work where thread is embroidered on cool, pastel shades of light cotton garments to bring us beautiful selected designs and pieces artfully done with lucknowi resham thread by crafts-persons online on iTokri. The best part about dastkar is the promotion of local craft and rural men and women who create indigenous crafts, which have been passed generation-to-generation.

As Chikan islucknow's most ancient and well-known art forms, believed to be introduced by the Mughals, Itokri has taken this initiative to makecraft-lovers well acquainted with this traditional artform, with the convenience and comfort of their home just by visiting their website, selecting the best from the collection and ordering what they like.
