The Origin Of The Channapatna Toys

The distance between Bengaluru and Channapatna, a tiny city, is around 60 kilometres. In Kannada, Channapatna is referred to as "Gombegalauru," which translates to "toy town." The state of Karnataka appropriately named it so since it is highly recognised for its distinctive wooden toys that are lacquered all over the world. The Channapatna wooden toys date back to the time of Tipu Sultan, who ruled the kingdom of Mysore for about 200 years. The Persian toymakers' expertise greatly impressed the ruler, who invited the skilled artisans to his realm to impart their skills to the native craftspeople.

The toys are renowned for their distinctive and vibrant design. The technique makes extensive use of symmetrical circular shapes and forms. Locally known as "Aale mara," ivory wood was originally used to carve the ancient craft, but over time, artisans have replaced it with different types of hardwood such as rubberwood, sycamore, silver wood, red cedar, etc. The wood is typically seasoned for two to three months after it has been purchased.

Then it is dispatched for cutting after it is prepared. The lathe machine, which is used to make symmetrical items around one axis, is where the carving is done. Before they are installed on the machine, the wood pieces are formed into cylindrical shapes. They are then formed into spheres, hemispheres, cones, and other round shapes using the machine. Using chisels and files, multiple shapes and forms are imparted to the rotating wooden cylinder. After achieving the desired shape, it is wiped with sandpaper to create an even surface.

The wooden toy is coloured with vegetable-dyed lacquer sticks while it is still revolving on the machine, and it is finished with a palm leaf shine. The toys' vibrant colours are created entirely from natural sources. Turmeric is used to make the yellow dye, the indigo powder is used to make the blue dye, Kumkum is used to make the red and orange dyes, and Katha or acacia tree extracts are used to make the brown dye.
