Process of Coir

Coir fiber is primarily obtained from the fibrous husk of the coconut. The fibrous layer of coconut is then separated manually from the hard shell by driving the fruit down onto a spike to split it which is also known as de-husking.

Coir Art of Kerala

"The Austronesian peoples, who were the first to domesticate coconuts, made extensive use of coir for ropes and sennit in the construction of houses and planks during their voyages in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Later Indian and Arab navigators who sailed the seas to Malaysia, China, and the Persian Gulf centuries ago also used coir for their ship's lines. Arab writers in the 11th century AD mentioned the widespread use of coir for ropes and rigs on ships. A UK coir industry was noted before the second half of the 19th century."
