In our modern lives, elderly people often find themselves alone as their families are stuck in their busy work schedules. It was the same for grandma Chandra Kanta Patni (now 82 yrs) who would get bored watching T.V. all day. So, to cure herself of this boredom, she picked up a crochet needle and thread and started making different kinds of items as she used to when she was younger and freer. As some years went by, it struck her daughter-in-law, Anjali Patni, who teaches crafts and textiles at a design college, and is in touch with local artisans, that if grandma were to just refine her designs a little, her creations would be much better suited to the modern taste. And this is how the process began- while grandma would create the items, her daughter-in-law would advise her on the designs. In 2019, very randomly, the duo set up their first sale. The idea that they could have their own business, while ordinary to many, was very unusual to them. Every year, they made rakhis for their families, and for their first sale, this is what they decided to sell. This year, iTokri gave the duo a chance to scale up their project and put up their designs for a much larger community. This is how Meenjhar, a small home-run initiative, was born. Meenjhar is a flower of the Khejri tree which is found in deserts and is considered an escape from harsh heat by travelers. It's a symbol of hope when we think there is none.
