Material  Description Handmade crochet work rakhi by Meenjhar handcrafted for the very special khatta meetha bond between brother and sister. This rakhi is handcrafted by elder women artisans who wanted to earn for themselves and for their families.
Meenjhar believes in the idea of sustainability which is why all their designs are re-usable. These rakhis are not just rakhis, they can easily turn into friendship bands, hair accessories, curtain ties, among many other things. Every Meenjhar rakhi comes with a Gaukriti paper which is made of cow-dung and seeds. This paper can be sowed in the soil to grow a new plant!

In our modern lives, elderly people often find themselves alone as their families are stuck in their busy work schedules. It was the same for grandma Chandra Kanta Patni (now 82 yrs) who would get bored watching T.V. all day. So, to cure herself of this boredom, she picked up a crochet needle and thread and started making different kinds of items as she used to when she was younger and freer. She would make bags, bed covers, bouquets, garlands, among other things, and gift them to her family, friends, and relatives on different occasions.
As some years went by, it struck to her daughter-in-law, Anjali Patni (now 54 yrs), who teaches crafts and textiles at a design college, and is in touch with local artisans, that if grandma were to just refine her designs a little, her creations would be much better suited to the modern taste. And this is how the process began- while grandma would create the items, her daughter-in-law would advise her on the designs.
In 2019, very randomly, the duo set up their first sale. The idea that they could have their own business, while ordinary to many, was very unusual to them. They had never thought that they could do something in their own name and this empowering feeling led them to the decision. Every year, they made rakhis for their families, and for their first sale, this is what they decided to sell. This year, iTokri gave the duo a chance to scale up their project and put up their designs on sale for a much larger community.
This is how Meenjhar, a small home-run initiative, was born. Meenjhar is a flower of the Khejri tree which is found in deserts and is considered a saviour from harsh heat by travellers. It's a symbol of hope when we think there is none. Echoing this sentiment, Meenjhar roped in elderly and middle-aged women who wanted to work for financial independence or for gaining self-respect, to work with them on this project.
The Mother and Daughter-in-Law duo.
