The nomadic Mir community live in small groups and traditionally known for being musicians, entertainers, bards and performers in rural Gujarat, Rajasthan, Sindh and parts of Punjab. A small group of Mirs (about 60-70 families) are living on a waste land on the outskirts of village Dasada located near Little Rann of Kutch in Surendranagar district. The women are skilled at beading. This provides them with minimal survival or a little extra income so as to avoid hunger and loss of dignity in dire situations. Eklavya Foundation and Soar Excursions decided to work with the community for the past two years with an objective of social and economic development of this small community on pilot basis. The women are trained and provided with raw materials that helps in value addition. The project led to the improvement in the quality of their hand-beaded bangles and developing new items like spectacle strings, necklace, bracelet, and anklets.
