P-TAL aims to revive the dying crafts of the Amritsar indigenous Thatheras community, which is characterized by practicing the only UNESCO-registered crafts in India. Jandiala Guru's Thatheras is a community of skilled craftsmen who specialize in the traditional techniques of driving brass and copper sheets into traditional tools. This craft colony of Jandiala Guru was founded during the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh (1883), a great Sikh monarch of the 19th century. He encouraged skilled Kashmir artisans to settle in the center of the Punjab kingdom. P-TAL aims to revitalize the debilitated crafts of Thateras throughout India through three approaches: the institutionalization of craftsmen, design development and education, and access to the market with the latest technology.
