The Basohli school of Pahari miniature paintings that flourished in the Indian hill states during the late 17th and the 18th centuries is known for its bold colours and lines. Originating in the princely state of Basohli, the style spread to the hill states and is considered to have evolved into the more prolific Kangra school. The paintings can be identified by their deep red borders, use of primary colours and very distinct facial features.
The earliest paintings in this style have been dated to the time of Raja Kirpal Pal (1678–93).
