Gudi Padwa, one of the very prosperous days, rounds up for us and brings a whole new set of opportunities and blessings. Like we celebrate New Year’s every year, this festival marks the beginning of the New Year for Marathi Hindus. Generally, according to the lunisolar calendar, it is celebrated in the Chaitra month on its first day in the Maharashtrian and Konkan regions. Similarly, it is celebrated as Ugadi by people in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. It also marks the harvest of the Rabi crops. Gudi Padwa's meaning comes from the Sanskrit word pratipada, the first day of a fortnight in the lunar calendar. The Gudi Padwa festival also commemorates the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya and his coronation. It also signifies his triumph after defeating Ravana.
Yet another significance behind the Gudi Padwa story is that it was the day when Lord Brahma created the universe, time, days and everything encompassing these concepts. This is depicted through several different arrangements. First, a silk scarf is tied to the shoot of bamboo with an upturned pot resting on top of the shoot. The Gudi is supposed to represent Lord Brahma’s flag, as mentioned in the Brahma Puranas. It is believed that this helps ward off evil spirits and brings prosperity and good luck. The Gudi is kept near windows, doors or trees etc. A variety of dishes are prepared at this festival like Puran Poli, shrikhand, puri bhaji, basundi etc.
Gudi Padwa Importance
This day is commenced by performing an oil bath, wearing new clothes and drawing rangolis made with coloured sand, rice, flower petals etc., near the thresholds of their doors. The Gudi is prepared, following which pooja is performed. Gudi Padwa first marked its celebration of the victory of the veteran Marathi warrior Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj who had a rife kingdom. Many people buy gold articles like jewellery, coins, and ornaments on this auspicious day because of the metal's connection to this day. It denotes the presence of prosperity and purity, which is what is believed to be blessed in our houses on this day. People also buy other precious things like vehicles, new places and other precious metals on this day. Celebrate Gudi Padwa 2022 with Gudi Padwa's unique gifts from iTokri.
