The traditional pattern of Kantha embroidery was professionally done with soft dhotis and sari which was embraced with simple running stitch along the edges.
It is regarded as one of the oldest forms of embroidery originating from India, one can trace its origins back to the pre-Vedic age (prior to 1500 BCE). As Kantha work is almost 500 years old, there's a weird myth surrounding it which says that Lord Buddha and his disciples used old rags with various kinds of patchwork to cover themselves with Kantha fabric at night.
