Material
This handpainted original work of phad painting is done on handmade paper base with natural pigment colours. A 700-year-old legacy passed down over generations within a single family, Phad finds its origins in Shahpura, near Bhilwara, Rajasthan. Phad is a type of scroll painting that narrates elaborate religious stories of local deities and gods. Created as travelling or mobile temples, these traditional paintings were carried by priest-singers of the Rabari tribe, called Bhopas and Bhopis, who would sing and perform stories of their local deities. The story was always of Devnarayan or Pabuji, both folk deities. The Phad painting would be unrolled, or unfolded after sunset, and the performance in front of village members, would last into the night. This is perhaps why the paintings are called ‘Phad’, which means ‘fold’ in the local dialect. This Indian tribal art comes from Bhilwara from the family of Kalyan Joshi. A wonderful painting for the discerning decor aficionado or a gift for an art lover. These are priceless collectibles.

A master of pada art, Kalyan Joshi started studying and working with her father and Guru Sri Srilal Joshi at the age of 8. In 2012 he was awarded the prestigious National Award. He is also the founder of "ANKAN" Kala Sansthan, who has provided phad drawings to thousands of children. Its mission is to create a world where everyone in the world can explore their culture and true connection through master artists who have inherited artistic knowledge from generation to generation.
