Process of Mangalgiri Saree

Mangaligiri cotton is made from factory-purchased cotton yarn. This cotton yarn is then boiled in caustic soda water for several hours to make it suitable for dyeing. If the yarn is intended for the production of white sari, it is bleached before weaving, otherwise, chemical dyes are used for dyeing. After dyeing, the threads are dried in the sun before being prepared for the weaving process.

Mangalgiri Weaving of Andhra Pradesh

Prior to the introduction of saris, Mangalgiri was always known for its pilgrimage importance due to the famous temple of Panakala Narasimha Swami located in the heart of the city. This temple is believed to have been there since Satya Yuga and below the present temple is the former temple of Lakshmi Narasimha Swami, where Yudhistira herself installed the main idol in the temple. However, the present temple was built in 180709 by Raja Vasireddi Venkatadri Naidu. According to ancient tradition, pilgrims had to pay homage to the lord and then buy a sari from a local weaver, another way of providing a livelihood for the local weaver.
