In the past, women in Maharashtra wore a lightweight garment called the Khun saree. It was also used to stitch a blouse paired with an Ilkal saree from the exact location. Today, this fabric is mainly worn by women of northern Karnataka. Believed to have originated in the 8th century BC, this garment first appeared as a piece of fabric wrapped around one's waist when worshipped by women during festivals or births of babies. The Khanachi saree is a beautiful, lightweight garment with multiple designs and patterns.

Processing Of Khun Fabric

The Khun is a handwoven fabric that has a years-long story. The tradition is still alive, and it's challenging to weave Khun. First, good colour and shade are prepared and then blended with different dye powders. Once the colour is ready, the yard is hung on a steel rod and dipped into the coloured water. Next, the yarn is dipped into giant metal pots at 40 to 50 degrees Celsius for a few minutes to create the desired colour. After 30 minutes, the colour becomes visible on the yarn. After more than 30 minutes, this yarn is squeezed again to remove excess water and then put into a dryer for about half an hour until it dries completely before being put together again with other threads for weaving Khun. This process takes 15 days or so to prepare 200 meters of Khun fabric and make it into Khun cloth by weaving it with bamboo rods that have been twisted together into long threads.
