Celebrate Karwa Chauth With Your Partner

Karwa Chauth is a beautiful Hindi festival celebrating the bond between a husband and wife. This one day festival hinges on the pious practice of fasting and praying.

Married women celebrate karwa Chauth to pray for the longevity of their husband’s life and unmarried women celebrate it to attract a good life partner from the universe. It is celebrated on the fourth day post the full moon. (1) This year, Karwa Chauth falls on the 13th of October and the auspicious time to celebrate it will commence at 1.59 am on that day and last till 14th of October, 3.08 am.

Celebrating Kawa Chauth Has Great Significance

There are a lot of tales associated with Karwa Chauth, and each story speaks of tremendous love and faith on part of the wife.

As the legend goes, once upon a time, there was a woman named Veeravati. She was an only sister to seven brothers. During one of the Karwa Chauth festivals, she came over to her parent's home. She began her fast after sunrise and was waiting to open her fast with the moon rise. Sometime in the evening, she started feeling hungry, and her brothers were disturbed by seeing their sister’s plight. They tricked her into believing that the moon had risen by placing a mirror next to a pipal tree. Veeravati unknowingly broke her fast, and that's when the ominous news of her husband’s death came.

Veeravati was devastated and decided to observe the fast again with full devotion. Impressed by her faith, Yama; the God of death, decided to restore Veeravati’s husband’s life.

Even Mahabharata alludes to the Karwa Chauth rituals, which Mata Parvati observed. This tale was narrated to Draupadi by Lord Krishna when Draupadi was in dire agony for her five husbands who had left for the Nilgiri mountains for self-penance.

In recent times, this festival has a lot of significance attributed to it.

  • It strengthens the bond between husband and wife
  • Karwa Chauth is all about a woman praying for the health and well-being of her husband by selflessly fasting for him. This strengthens the bond between a couple and reminds them of the power of their relationship.

  • It makes one restore their faith in the institution of marriage
  • Karwa Chauth is a very heartwarming festival and when an unmarried man or woman witnesses the charm and warmth of this festival, they automatically start believing in marriage. This is exceptionally important in today’s time when people are getting so used to the idea of independent living, that they shy away from marriage. Karwa Chauth is a great way to rekindle that age old fondness of marriage in the coming generations.

  • It celebrates the solidarity of women by making them get together on this day
  • While celebrating Karwa Chauth, women usually get together in the evening to perform the rituals pertaining to this festival. This gives women a chance to break their duties and mingle with each other.

  • Celebrating Karwa Chauth is a great way to carry forward our deep-rooted customs and empowering rituals
  • By observing the rituals associated with Karwa Chauth, we make sure that future generations also take cognizance of our Indian traditions and make an effort to carry them forward. Indian rituals and traditions have a deep rooted impact on our mental health as they make us value our relationships and encourage us to nurture them. (2
